Have you ever passed up on a possible life changing opportunity simply because of all the “what if’s”? Or perhaps you don’t feel “ready”?
Now that the opportunity is gone, do you feel ready ? What if all your “what if’s” didn’t happen at all? Or what if it did?
Now what? Oh right! We wait for the next opportunity that may come in a second, a day, a week, a year? God knows. But, why did you really pass up on that opportunity in the first place?
Here’s an instance when I did the exact same, so this is not an instance of kettle calling pot black. 😉
It was sophomore year of high school, and I was 14 years old, going on 15. At this time, I had been dancing for a little while, but it was just for fun and nothing serious.
There was this upcoming Nigerian artist who saw me dancing at an event, and asked me to choreograph for his dancers, and dance in his music video as well(No. it was not one of those Ashawo music videos) . Initially, I was so excited! My first though was “oh little ol’ me in a music video?! That’s so cool!” then it turned to “little ol’ me in a music video? I don’t think so.” Questions and doubts began flooding my mind; “Am I good enough? Will I embarrass myself? What if I suck? I’m not in shape, I can’t possibly be in a dance video! I’m too fat! I’m not pretty enough to be in a video!” The list goes on. So I ended up declining the offer and I lost an opportunity to learn something new.
When I think back on that opportunity, I just laugh at myself because it just seems really silly that I declined such an offer for petty reasons. What if I rocked it and gained an even bigger opportunity as a result? Why did I allow my mind limit me without giving myself the opportunity to explore something new?
The mind is a powerful tool, but let’s not forget that it is a “tool”. Meaning it is subject to you, and it is for your use. Don’t allow your mind or even fear keep you from taking that leap and getting out of your comfort zone. Train your mind to get excited when you face challenges, because it is an opportunity for you to learn and grow.
Here is a challenge for you: If you’re the type of person to explore all the why’s and what-ifs when presented a challenge or an opportunity that requires you to step out of your comfort zone, try being like Nike – JUST DO IT!
It’s been in my heart to write this post, simply because I know I definitely needed this myself. I hope you were blessed by this post! I’m cheering for ya!
